EBL Naturopathic Clinic

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is the use of water and varying temperatures to help promote healing, aid in detoxification of the body, decrease pain and improve blood and lymphatic flow.  Hydrotherapy has been one of the foundational medicines used in traditional Naturopathy since its inception. There are various ways to incorporate hydrotherapy to help our bodies.

An increasing number of spas are starting to offer hydrotherapy treatments, where you alternate between hot and cold pools, saunas and steam rooms. These therapies are becoming increasingly popular, not just for the relaxation aspect, but because of how beneficial these therapies are for the body and the mind.

The EBL Approach

At EBL we incorporate a variety of hydrotherapy methods as part of our treatment plans. We teach people how to use this powerful therapy in their own homes to assist in their healing journey and to improve their quality of life. Coming soon to EBL is an infrared sauna, so that our patients can take advantage of all the benefits of this powerful therapy when they visit our clinic. We have also provided a shower right in the Sauna treatment room so that patients can get an even more therapeutic benefit by creating an alternating hot/cold therapy between the shower and the sauna.

What are the Benefits?

  • There are many benefits for the various forms of hydrotherapy, including:
  • Increased circulation
  • Improved metabolic functioning
  • Improved detoxification capacity of the cells and the body to remove toxins

  • Decrease in pain and inflammation
  • Improved Joint mobility
  • Boost in immune function
  • Increased capacity for the body to heal from injury

Alternating Hot/Cold Therapy

The basis for this therapy is that heat opens up blood vessels and allows for increase blood flow. The cold that follows constricts blood vessels. Alternating between these two temperatures creates a pumping action of blood and the lymphatic system, helping to increase circulation, improve blood flow and therefore nutrient flow (many nutrients are carried in blood) and help increase detoxification capacity of the body.

This is a therapy that can be done in the comfort of your home, either with contrast showers or hot/cold towel application to a concentrated part of your body.

Infrared Saunas

Infrared saunas are becoming an increasingly popular therapy in the health circles. Infrared light has been shown to penetrate human tissue, which can help heat up the tissues and assist in metabolic function. Some of the noted benefits of using infrared sauna therapy are:

  • Improved detoxification
  • Weight loss
  • Pain relief
  • Wound healing
  • Blood pressure and circulatory regulation

Most saunas out there are dry-heat or steam saunas, which reach an increased temperature but don’t have the benefit of penetrating deep into the tissues. Infrared saunas employ a lower temperature which is much more comfortable for most people, and can still cause a great amount of sweating.
